Virtual Incubation's roster of portfolio companies represents technology ranging from breast cancer detection to "laboratories-on-a-chip." Here's a look at VIC's 12 companies:

Ascendant Diagnostics

A breast cancer diagnostics company licensed from technology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences that can diagnose breast cancer much more reliably than mammograms.

BioDetection Instruments

Produces high-performance biosensors, assay kits and instruments for the rapid detection of food pathogens and chemical residues.

A multiple winner on the international business plan competition circuit during the last year, this University of Arkansas startup has developed a treatment for osteoporosis that binds to the bone and encourages new bone growth.

Has developed an innovative approach for cost-effective delivery of dissolved oxygen to a wide range of target concentrations. (See Story on Page 19.)

Its tech differentiates benign lesions such as moles or liver spots from malignant ones, such as melanoma, a deadly cancer for which early diagnosis is key to survival.
