Nordex N90 2.5 megawatt wind turbine.

Production begins Monday at Jonesboro's Nordex USA plant, which makes wind turbines and now employs 42 people.

Officials broke ground on the 115,000-SF plant in September 2009. In a news release, Nordex said the plant's first production crew will go to work assembling a wind turbine nacelle, which houses the engine and other key components and sits high atop the turbine tower.

"Two years ago, we announced our intention to make Nordex wind turbines in the US, for the US," Ralf Sigrist, president and CEO of Nordex USA, said. "Today we're putting our hands to the metal and doing it."

Nordex said the first Jonesboro production crew was hired earlier this year and just completed a 10-week training program at Nordex's flagship plant in Rostock, Germany.

Construction on the plant was completed in July. The company has hired 150 employees in the U.S. to date, including 42 in Jonesboro. It said it plans to employ up to 1,000 nationally within five years.

The company has said it wants to employ 700 in Jonesboro and be produding up to 300 wind turbines per year by 2014.
