Increased distribution of its primary product and interest in new products drove second-quarter sales growth for Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies Inc., the company said.

AERT, of Springdale, said Monday sales during the quarter ended June 30 were up 5 percent from a year earlier. Total sales were $23.2 million.

The company manufactures wood fiber/recycled polyethylene plastic composite decking under the brand names MoistureShield and ChoiceDeck.

Net income for the quarter was $1.3 million, the same as in 2009. But in the second quarter of 2009, the company was able to reverse a fee of $300,000 it had previously recorded.

AERT spent an additional $500,000 during the second quarter on promoting its products.

"A key goal for 2009 was to reduce AERT's overall cost structure and operating costs while maintaining our ability to react to market opportunities," said Joe Brooks, CEO of AERT. "We continue to work on this in 2010 and while our new recycling facility at Watts, Oklahoma is up and running we are implementing Phase II to effectively double its capacity with the assistance of a 15 year, 3 percent interest loan for over $3 million sponsored by the State of Oklahoma under the ARRA State Energy Program."

In January the company was delisted from the Nasdaq and is now traded on the OTC Bulletin Board.
