1 min read

Truman Arnold, who leads one of the largest private companies in Arkansas, and wife Anita have given $10 million to the Texas A&M University-Texarkana, Texas. It is the largest private donation in the university’s history.

The money will establish the Anita and Truman Arnold Scholars Program. It is the latest in a series of contributions from the couple.

"The excitement at Texas A&M University-Texarkana is infectious, and today’s announcement will make sure that all students within this region who have the desire to seek a brighter future through a true university education will have that opportunity," said A&M-Texarkana President, Dr. C.B. "Bix" Rathburn III.

The scholarship program will begin in time for the fall 2010 semester.

The donation comes as the university welcomes students to a new $125 million campus, which includes a $75 million University Center. Construction of the Bringle Lake Village is set to begin later this summer; a new $15 million student living and learning community is scheduled to open the summer of 2011.

The Arnolds are Texarkana-area natives. Their recent contributions include 72 acres of land for university campus development, $1.2 million to fund a Chair of the Department of Information Sciences, and $300,000 to acquire faculty for its College of Engineering.

Truman Arnold leads the Truman Arnold Cos., a petroleum wholesaler and aviation services provider. In 2009, the company ranked No. 3 on Arkansas Business’ annual list of the state’s largest private companies.
