T.J. Johnston, 29

Vice President of Business Development

Conway Development Corp.

T.J. Johnston hasn't strayed very far after getting his marketing degree from the University of Central Arkansas in 2003.

After interning with the Conway Development Corp. in 2001, he was hired upon graduation as a project manager. In 2004, he became executive director of the Conway Downtown Partnership, and under his leadership, the area was transformed with more than $1.5 million in new streetscape projects. Johnston also worked with private developers on numerous projects that have become anchors of the downtown district.

In late 2008, Johnston moved into his current job with the CDC. His primary responsibility is managing the construction of Hewlett Packard's new $36 million facility, which will employ 1,200 workers. It's the CDC's first effort acting as developer/owner, and Johnston has the project running smoothly.

"This is a dream job for me," Johnston said. "I'm surrounded by good people, really a family. We've had a lot of success and have transformed the city."

He also has been very active in the community, serving as a board member and as president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Central Arkansas. He was also appointed to the Conway Historic District Commission.

He has led visits to more than 30 major employers in Conway, which have resulted in at least two expansion projects.
