Smith and Co. to Sign On With New Show Dec. 6

Arkansas Business "Whisper"-holics will recall our Nov. 8 item confirming that former KMJX-FM, 105 (Magic 105), morning jock "The Outlaw" Tommy Smith was in talks with Signal Media's Little Rock sports-talk station KABZ-FM, 103.7 ("The Buzz"), about launching a new morning show there.

A radio station insider confirms that Smith will sign on there with a brand-new morning show on Dec. 6. Joining him will be Buzz radio vet and former Razorback football player David Bazzel and — on three days a week — Democrat-Gazette sports editor and "Like It Is" columnist Wally Hall.

Our source said the show's main focus will be sports, with regular detours into politics, entertainment and other topics. We're also told to expect a "different Tommy" from what we knew on Magic, one who can be smart and funny without resorting to talk that might bait the Federal Communications Com-mission in the post-Janet Jackson broadcast landscape.

Bazzel, meanwhile, is said to once again be playing the straight-man role, which he honed while working with one-time Buzz loose cannon Stanley Knox when the two starred in their own morning show with former KATV-TV, Channel 7, reporter Louisa Drouet circa 2002.

No word yet on what will happen to another KATV reporter, Justin Acri, who's now holding down the morning show slot at the Buzz with his show, "The Zone," which he hosts with Nathan Christian.
