Smith Drug Co. of Spartanburg, S.C., recently announced plans to open a distribution center in Paragould early next year.

Smith Drug will employ about 55 workers in the 100,000-SF center, said Sue McGowan, economic development director for the Paragould/Greene County Chamber of Commerce.

Smith Drug bought the speculative industrial building from the Economic Development Corp. of Paragould at an undisclosed price, McGowan said. The building on 20 acres had been listed for $1.9 million.

Features of the site include four trucking docks, which are expandable to 23, and its location in the industrial park area of Paragould.

"We wanted to put down roots in a community that cares about people," Smith Drug President Ken Couch said in news release. "As one of the few independent wholesalers left, we can't wait to serve Arkansas' independent pharmacies."

Smith Drug has sales of more than $1 billion annually to more than 800 independent pharmacies across nine states.
