The new 2003-2004 edition of "Chambers USA America's Leading Business Lawyers" includes 12 Arkansas firms and 36 individual Arkansas lawyers.

Published by Chambers & Partners of London, the legal guide, which claims that it's unlike any other directory in the United States, bases its recommendations on its research into the strengths and reputations of lawyers. No one can buy their way into the rankings, the directory says.

In-depth interviews with clients and with attorneys are done over the telephone, each one lasting about half an hour.

For the new U.S. directory, more than 4,500 interviews were conducted covering the entire country. They were carried out by a team of 30 full-time researchers over a period of 12 months.

The book can be ordered online at www.chambersandpartners.com for 130 pounds, or about $212.

The Wright Lindsey & Jennings LLP firm was ranked No. 1 in the state, followed by Mitchell Williams Selig Gates & Woodyard PLLC and Friday Eldredge & Clark.

Chambers' interviewers praised the Wright firm for its strength in corporate/M&A, real estate, general commercial litigation and employment law. The Mitchell firm was lauded for its real estate practice, which it called "the best in Arkansas," and the Friday firm was said to be "ahead of the competition" in litigation.

Law firms and individual attorneys are ranked on a scale of 1-6. The qualities on which rankings are assessed include technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial awareness/astuteness, diligence, commitment and other qualities valued by the client.
