Former Arkansas outfielder Sam Bates will begin his professional baseball career with the Idaho Chukars, rookie league affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

Bates, a 28th round pick, has signed a deal with the Royals. He'll be assigned to Idaho Falls, Idaho. He hit .240 with six home runs and 25 runs batted in, while appearing in 45 games with 37 starts.

During his two seasons at Arkansas the Cabot native appeared in 70 games, hitting .239 with 32 RBI.
