A Tennessee correspondent tells us Super D Drugs Inc., a $200 million Memphis-based drugstore chain, could be the acquisition target for Stephen LaFrance Pharmacy Inc.

We recently whispered that LaFrance, which owns 15 USA Drug and Beauty Market stores, was looking to make a major acquisition ("Whispers," Sept. 15).

Our contact in Memphis tells us that Jerry Treece, owner of Super D Drugs, acknowledges there are negotiations between his chain of 115 stores and LaFrance. The stores, which are known as Super D, Super D Express and Ike's, are in Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Treece bought the chain from Fleming Cos. in 1988.

Arkansas Business estimates that Stephen LaFrance Pharmacy, the 24th-largest private company in the state, has revenue of $180 million.
