Mustain Seeking Curves Instead Of Spirals On Mound In Minors

Mitch Mustain is throwing again.

The former Springdale and Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback has taken a roundabout way to the pitcher’s mound, resuming a sport he had not played in eight years as he attempts a pro baseball career with the Bristol (Va.) White Sox, in the Chicago White Sox system.

At 24, Mustain is a little older than his teammates in the short-season, Rookie-level Appalachian League, but after intensive work with coaches in extended spring training in Arizona, he appears to be finding his groove as a right-handed reliever.

Mustain is a long way from Springdale, where he passed for 3,817 yards and 47 touchdowns on his way to a state championship under Gus Malzahn. He’s a long way from Fayetteville, where he was 8-0 as a starter for the Razorbacks before things soured, and he’s a long way from USC, where he transferred from Arkansas and was buried on the Trojans’ depth chart.

And apparently, Mustain likes it that way.

“It’s been interesting,” Mustain told Tim Hayes, in a Bristol Herald Courier article. “I’m just going with it kind of day by day and week by week. It’s been fun. It’s a good place to play and a good league to start off in.”
