Mr. Dunderbak's Returning to McCain Mall

Richard Davidson, who opened Mr. Dunderbak's in 1973, will open an updated version of his quirky German restaurant on the lower level of McCain Mall in September.

Mr. Dunderbak's, beloved purveyor of bratwurst and cheese-slathered pretzels, will reopen in McCain Mall in September courtesy of the original owner.

Richard Davidson, 79, of Hot Springs Village has signed a 10-year lease on the 1,700-SF space in McCain Mall. He told ArkansasBusiness.com that work should begin Monday to convert the former Regis hair salon on the lower floor of the North Little Rock mall.

He has not yet set an exact opening date.

Davidson opened Mr. Dunderbak's on the upper level of the new McCain Mall in 1973, after he retired from a 20-year Air Force career. He sold the quirky concept in 1990, and the new owners continued to operate the store until 2000.

The eatery will be much the same as it was when it started, Davidson said, complete with made-from-scratch pretzels. But it will be larger by about 500 SF, and he plans a vegan section - including vegan sausages on the bratwurst stand - and a wider variety of imported, bottled beers. The restaurant will also feature a lounge area.

Davidson has been retired for about 22 years, but he's resurrecting the popular German eatery partially for the sake of his daughter, who is in her 50s now and is interested in operating the restaurant during her retirement years.

He is also reopening with Mr. Dunderbak's fans in mind. A 2-year-old Facebook group titled "Mr. Dunderbak's in McCain Mall - bring it back!!!!" with more than 1,500 members sparked the idea, he said.

McCain Mall announced the return on its Facebook page on Thursday.
