Quarterback Tyler Wilson and running back Knile Davis will spend the next two days in New York City and Bristol, Conn. meeting national media.
Davis and Wilson are making the trip to the headquarters of Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports and ESPN as part of an awards campaign conducted by Arkansas. There’s a Twitter account associated with the push — @ARKTD2012 — and the school is hoping to use it as an early jump on raising awareness for Arkansas' candidates for the Heisman Trophy and other national awards for the duo and their teammates.
It’s an exciting opportunity, but one that does not seem to have distracted Wilson from the real task at hand. Football games aren't won in a TV studio, ya know.
“Somewhere in there we’ll learn how to play football, continue to work on playing football,” Wilson deadpanned when asked about the trip. “But I think it will be exciting.”
First stop will be NYC where the duo will participate in interviews and photo shoots with Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports. (Sure seems like a convenient time to shoot a college football preview cover doesn't it?)
Wednesday’s itinerary will include the “car wash” at ESPN. Davis and Wilson will bounce between interview opportunities across multiple platforms — TV, Internet and radio.
Arkansas Coach John L. Smith will be at ESPN headquarters a day earlier. Razorback representatives figure to answer questions about a crazy spring and why the team’s goals of SEC and BCS titles remain unchanged despite a coaching transition.
Much of what they experienced at SEC Media Days last week should have prepared them for this round of questions.
Wilson expects it to be a “whirlwind.” While it’s a lot to take on in a short time, Davis said he’s happy to for the opportunity.
“I feel honored,” said Davis, who is making his first trip to New York City. “It will be cool.”
Timing is great for the trip.
Fall camp doesn’t start at Arkansas until Aug. 2 and the attention is beginning to shift to college football as July comes to a close. Outside of other conference media days (and Monday’s NCAA sanctions on Penn State) there is little happening this week of interest to college football fans.
