Arkansas State’s coaching staff should certainly know its way around.

New assistants J.B. Grimes, offensive line, and John Thompson, defensive coordinator, head a contingent of ASU coaches with strong ties to Arkansas. The two, who are among six Red Wolves assistants who have coached at Arkansas schools or come from the state or both, believe the home ties give the program a plus under first-year coach and Arkansas native Gus Malzahn.

“I’m an Arkansas guy,” Grimes, of Clarendon, said in The Home Team, part of our 2012 ArkansasSports360.com Football Preview. “I played my high school and college football in Arkansas and I spent eight years of my coaching career in the state of Arkansas.”

Find out how the coaches hope to use their Arkansas connections in recruiting under Malzahn, how they hope to improve on last year’s 10-3 record and Sun Belt Conference championship and the attraction of coaching with Malzahn in his first collegiate head coaching job in our 2012 ArkansasSports360.com Football Preview Magazine.

Also find out Malzahn’s thoughts on assuming the top job for the first time and watch him diagram one of his favorite plays, learn how returning quarterback Ryan Aplin wants to improve on a record-setting year and what personnel are expected to help the Red Wolves on both sides of the ball in 2012.
