Arkansas State football coach Gus Malzahn was true to his word that ended the press release announcing the dismissal of running back Michael Dyer. At the end of the two-sentence statement, Malzahn said he'd have no further comment on the 5-star running back.
Not that the sudden dismissal, or the news of the release of an Arkansas State Police videotape of a March traffic stop of Dyer, didn't beg a few questions.
So, three news outlets, including this one, had reporters on hand as Malzahn came off the golf course following Monday's outing to benefit the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. Malzahn was the guest host of the event, and later Monday night was scheduled to speak to Hall of Fame supporters. Between being abrupt and huffy when asked about Dyer and smiling and jocular about his golf game or the event later in the evening, Malzahn had these responses:
What can you say, what are you willing to say about … ?
“Yeah, uh, I’m not going to answer any questions regarding team dismissal."
OK, how about, how do you handle situations with players … ?
“Like I said I’m not answering any of those questions. Be glad to talk about this event, and we had a great time today. And it’s a super cause."
How did you play today?
“I was embarrassing. That’s the bottom line. I feel bad for my teammates, but this is such a great event. It’s great to see a lot of familiar faces and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame is a great event, and it was a big hit today."
Did you know about the Searcy state police stop ... ?
"I’ve already said, I’m not answering any questions. Next question.”
What do you know about Mike’s future from here on out?
