Coaches and players were hoping for the best when Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Greg Childs was injured after going for a ball in the end zone during a recent scrimmage. They were hopeful Childs, who went down clutching both knees and was carted off the field, would be able to make a quick return.

Childs won’t be back this season.

The Vikings confirmed on Sunday that Childs tore patella tendons in both knees and will undergo surgery. His rookie season, off to a promising start in camp, is finished.

Childs had only recently gotten back to full speed after tearing the patella tendon in his right knee as a junior. He played for Arkansas in 2011, but struggled physically and mentally with getting over the injury.

Scouts were impressed with what they saw from Childs during Arkansas Pro Day after he struggled as a senior. He'd recently begun to establish himself as a possible contributor during camp.

“It’s unfortunate,” Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder said. “We saw some of those plays he made a couple days ago.”

Childs was a fourth-round pick by Minnesota. He was viewed as a possible first-round pick before his injury against Vanderbilt during the 2010 season.
