The Little Rock Police Department is investigating the alleged theft of $92,650 from an Arkansas Foodbank checking account.

Phyllis Haynes, executive director of the food bank, said Monday that a food bank employee discovered the funds missing last Wednesday.

A report from LRPD says Craig Smith, 45, of Bryant wrote checks to himself from the food bank account; one check was written as recently as Aug. 3. Smith was a food bank employee who "was terminated" from his job July 16, the report states.

No arrests have been made, Haynes said.

Insurance will cover the loss for the food bank, which operates with a monthly budget of about $550,000, Haynes said. The food bank will continue to operate.

"We've already notified our major donors that we follow standard financial procedures," Haynes said. "It's unconscionable that someone would steal from a nonprofit organization, let alone one that feeds hungry people."

In 2010, the Arkansas Foodbank distributed 13.3 million pounds of food to 166,000 people.
