A former Arkansas State University professor, Joel Gambill, is daily sorting through nearly 2,000 records belonging to the late journalist John Robert Starr. Gambill plans to write a biography of the fiery editor and columnist.

Starr retired as managing editor of the statewide daily newspaper the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 1992 and was credited with helping the Arkansas Democrat pressure the Arkansas Gazette into selling to the Democrat in 1991. Starr died in 2000.

Gambill taught journalism at ASU in Jonesboro for 41 years and was chairman of the journalism department for 36 years.

Starr’s collection of papers and audio and video recordings belong to ASU and are not yet available to the public.

Starr’s son, Rusty Starr, was Gambill’s student at ASU and had coordinated with Gambill to donate his father’s materials to the university.
