What a difficult week for Arkansas Coach John L. Smith.

Smith is currently in Idaho Falls, Idaho, attending the funeral of his younger brother. Bart Smith, 53, passed away Monday and Smith flew to Idaho following practice Thursday for the service. John L. Smith will return Friday night to be with the team as it prepares for Saturday's 6 p.m. game with Rutgers.

Here's the statement from the UA:

"Coach John L. Smith flew to Idaho Falls last night following practice to attend the funeral of his brother (Bart) who passed away Monday. The funeral is being held this afternoon and Coach Smith will return to Fayetteville early this evening. "

It's been a trying week for Smith, who faced national ridicule for an odd Monday press conference, following a 52-0 loss to No. 1 Alabama. Federal court documents filed on Wednesday reveal Smith is reporting $25.7 million in debt.

On top of all that, Smith had to deal with the death of his brother. Here's a portion of the obituary for Bart Smith, courtesy the Idaho Falls Post Register:

Bart's favorite pastime was following his brother, John L's, college football teams wherever he was coaching, and of course, following his nephew Alex Smith's NFL career at the 49ers.

And to think John L. Smith was telling us to smile.
