Nos. 13/24 OUACHITA BAPTIST 31, ARKANSAS TECH 24
ARKADELPHIA- The Ouachita Tigers (3-0, 1-0 GAC) walked away with a victory in their conference opener with Arkansas Tech (1-3, 0-2 GAC), although it might not have been the way that they wanted to. The Tigers entered halftime with a score of 21-3 in their favor, but after a rough third quarter, had to rebound in the fourth to put the game away at a score of 31-24.
Ouachita put up a total of 436 yards in the game, 217 coming on the ground and 219 through the air. Chris Rycraw led the Tiger rushing attack with 131 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Benson Jordan, despite going down late in the game with an injury, finished the game with 219 yards and a touchdown while completing 22 of 30 pass attempts.
Arkansas Tech quarterback Tanner Marsh finished the game leading his team in rushing and passing yards, recording 69 yards and a touchdown on the ground and 206 yards and a touchdown on 22 of 33 through the air.
No. 24 HENDERSON STATE 56, SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE 20
ARKADELPHIA - Henderson State entered Saturday's game with Southeastern Oklahoma sporting the third-highest offensive output nationally, averaging 555 yards of offense per game, but it was the defense and special teams that propelled the Reddies to a 56-20 win over the Savage Storm, Saturday at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium.
Henderson State, 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Great American Conference, was limited to just 45 offensive plays and possessed the football for just 16:55 the entire game. The main reason for the low time of possession number for the Reddies was a result of four special teams or defensive touchdowns. They also benefited from a pair of big offensive passing plays that resulted in touchdowns to limit the time the Henderson offense could be on the field.
Henderson took the early lead the conventional way as Jarvis Smith scored on a 2-yard run to cap off a 9-play, 67-yard drive with 4:19 left in the first quarter. It didn't take long for the Reddies to extend the lead to 14-0 as Robert Jordan broke loose for an 85-yard punt return for a score.
On Henderson's next possession, the Reddies were pinned back at their own 1, but Kevin Rodgers orchestrated an 11-play, 99-yard drive with Smith scoring on a 5-yard run to make the score 22-0. The next offensive series for the Reddies consisted of just three plays with Rodgers connecting with Elliot Hebert for an 82-yard scoring strike to extend Henderson's lead to 29-0 at the break.
Keaton Stigger totaled a career-high 21 tackles to set a new Henderson State record for tackles in a game surpassing Jon Jett who had 20 tackles against Southern Arkansas in 2004.
