News and notes from Monday’s Arkansas football media availability …
I. Hamilton Honored
Cobi Hamilton’s record-setting 303 receiving yards weren't enough to help get Arkansas a victory against Rutgers. It was enough to land him Co-SEC Offensive Player of the Week.
Hamilton’s 303 night set school and SEC records. He finished with 10 catches and all of the team’s three touchdowns.
Following the game Hamilton said it was hard to revel in the accomplishment because of the loss. Rutgers won 35-26.
“I would trade all my yards,” Hamilton said. “We came here to win.”
II. Season Over
Playing with a fullback on the field can make running the football easier. But moving the ball on the ground without Kiero Small and Kody Walker shouldn’t be impossible, quarterback Tyler Wilson said.
There are still ways to be effective running the football without Small, who was declared out for the season by Coach John L. Smith during a Little Rock Touchdown Club appearance Monday, and Walker. Wilson noted Small was a “special” player, but said there are other ways to run the ball without a fullback.
“We can still run the ball out of two backs, no question,” Wilson said. “I think we can also run the ball out of one-back runs and do some things in the draw game and that kind of stuff. You throw it, then you hit you one of those and that’s what we did a lot of last year. We made that a key point, was that one-back running game.”
Arkansas is averaging 97.8 yards per game on the ground this season.
III. Messing With Texas
Playing at home hasn’t done much for the Razorbacks. They’re off to a 1-3 start despite all four games being played in state.
How will this team fare in its home away from home?
Players are hopeful they can extend their recent Texas winning streak in Dallas to College Station. Arkansas has won four games the last three seasons inside Cowboys Stadium.
"This team is undefeated in Texas,” center Travis Swanson said. “So we’re going to take some pride in that.”
Speaking Out
“We had high expectations coming into the season and this is kind of a shock to all of us, and we’re still trying to figure out what we really need to do fix everything. Do I think the season is over? Not at all. I think it’s still just beginning and we can still turn this season around and make it a great one.”
