CARTI Considering Riley Road Site for Cancer Center

Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute Inc. announced Friday that is considering a site off Interstate 630 in Little Rock for its Cancer Center.

CARTI signed an option to study a 37-acre site at Riley Road, adjacent to the Woodland Heights retirement community, according to a CARTI news release.

In 2011, CARTI said it had bought the for-profit Little Rock Hematology Oncology group and was planning on building its own comprehensive cancer treatment center. Earlier this year, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, which helped create CARTI, saw the move as a threat and cut ties with CARTI at a cost of $20 million.

Meanwhile, CARTI continued to search for the right site for its center.

"As we looked at available real estate, we needed a location that allowed us to house medical, surgical and radiation oncology and diagnostic radiology under one roof," Jan Burford, president and CEO of CARTI, said in the news release. "The Riley Road property has the acreage needed, and the natural surroundings are just beautiful."

The deal is expected to close in mid-December, pending approval from the CARTI board of directors, CARTI said.
