NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference announced today that Arkansas State’s Qushaun Lee has been suspended for the Red Wolves football game on Saturday, Sept. 29 against Western Kentucky University.

Lee was penalized for a personal foul against Alcorn State on Saturday in a situation where he lowered his head tackling the Alcorn State quarterback. Though Lee was not ejected from the game, video of the play from multiple camera angles was reviewed Monday by the Sun Belt Conference and NCAA National Coordinator of Officials and Secretary-Rules Editor Rogers Redding.

The NCAA Football Playing Rules Book addresses that “when there is a foul called for initiating contact/targeting an opponent (Rules 9-1-3 and 9-1-4) that does not result in a player disqualification, there shall automatically be a video review by the conference for possible additional sanctions before the next scheduled game.” In this case, the outcome of the review was that Lee should have been ejected from the game and that a one game suspension was warranted.

Arkansas State appealed the suspension and the appeal was heard by the Executive Committee of the Sun Belt Conference Board of Directors. The members of the board decided to uphold Commissioner Karl Benson’s ruling of a one game suspension and that Lee will not play on Saturday versus WKU.
