RUSSELLVILLE – Tanner Marsh passed for 213 yards with two touchdowns while rushing for 69 yards and another touchdown, Casey Henderson added two rushing touchowns, and Logan Genz added 11 tackles as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (3-3, 1-2 Great American Conference) rallied from a 17-point deficit in the third quarter, claiming a 45-38 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma on Homecoming at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.
The Wonder Boys have not lost a Homecoming game since the renovation of Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field in 2007.
"I am proud of this coaching staff and team," said head coach Steve Mullins. "We were down and they kept fighting and fighting, and obviously the defense caused some great turnovers in the second half and we were able to capitalize. I'm proud of our guys for coming out and playing the second half the way they did."
The Savage Storm jumped out to an early lead, capping a game-opening drive with a 62-yard touchdown pass from Jercolby Bradley to Anthony Gale, giving Southeastern an early 7-0 lead. The Wonder Boys wasted no time getting those points back, as Marsh connected with Cassius Washington on a 60-yard pass, setting up a three-yard touchdown pass from Marsh to Ford and knotting the game at 7-7.
After the two teams traded possessions, Southeastern pulled ahead 14-7 after a two-yard touchdown rush by Ladarius Abrams, who led all players with 176 yards on 18 carries.
In the second quarter, the Savage Storm extended its lead on a touchdown run by C.J. Kirk, pulling ahead 21-7 with 6:16 to play before the half. However, Marsh used his legs on the subsequent drive to get the Wonder Boys back on the board; picking up rushes of 12, 24, and a touchdown run of two yards to pull Arkansas Tech to within 21-14.
Southeastern tacked on a 28-yard field goal by Chris Peoples as time expired in the first half to take a 24-14 lead into the intermission.
After forcing the Wonder Boys to punt on the opening possession of the second half, Southeastern used a 48-yard rush by Abrams to take a 31-14 lead, its biggest lead of the game, with 12:07 remaining in the third quarter.
Arkansas Tech began its comeback on the subsequent drive, as Trevor Pinkston capped a nine-play, 47-yard drive with a season-long 37-yard field goal, pulling the Wonder Boys to within 31-17.
The Wonder Boys defense forced a turnover on the next Savage Storm drive, as Michael Waldon picked off a Bradley pass and returned it to within the Southeastern five-yard line. Henderson punched the ball into the end zone four plays later and pulled Arkansas Tech to within 31-24.
Arkansas Tech's defense then forced Southeastern Oklahoma into a punting situation on the following drive, but an errant snap sailed over punter Jared Helm's head and through the end zone, giving Arkansas Tech a safety and pulling the Wonder Boys to within 31-26.
The Wonder Boys went on the offensive again, and Pinkston capped a nine-play, 43-yard drive with a 36-yard field goal to pull Arkansas Tech to within to (31-29) with 57 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
