Who says you have to be a hair stylist to open a beauty shop? A lot of people do, according to Royalty Beauty Boutique owner Charlye Woodard of Little Rock, but with a passion for quality service, Woodard said, she is on the path to proving them wrong.

Devoting herself full time to ministry since 2006 at the Christ Come Church, Woodard opened the 1,600-SF salon and boutique in April at 11400 Huron Lane in Little Rock across the street from the Westside Post Office with a $5,000 investment.

Her purpose was to create what she calls a peaceful, wholesome Christian environment. "Patronizing hair and nail salons for a number of years, I found the level of customer service lacking in a number of areas," Woodard said.

At Royalty Beauty Boutique, Woodard said, clients will find a no drama, no cussing and no gossip zone. "This is your time to be treated like royalty and to have an experience that's going to provide you with peace and a level of comfort you might not get otherwise," she said.

Currently, Pamela Storay, Precious Thornton and Nails by Tori staff the four-chair salon, but Woodard is looking for two additional stylists and another nail technician to fill the other stations at the shop. She wants to expand the operation to include 10 stations eventually.

Woodard advised potential entrepreneurs to "be clear about your vision, and be sure you align yourself with the right team members," especially when the would-be business owner doesn't have experience in the industry she's planning to enter.

"I'm a very strong, customer service-driven person, and because this is a service business and because I aspire for excellence, then I think those are the ingredients that make a successful business in a customer service industry," she said.

In five years, Woodard said, she plans to add another location, perhaps in North Little Rock.
