Arkansas wide receiver Brandon Mitchell did not play in Saturday’s 30-27 loss to Ole Miss because of what Coach John L. Smith called “a violation of team rules.”

Mitchell did not even travel with the team. Smith said a decision to leave Mitchell in Fayetteville was made Friday.

“It’s a team rule at this point,” Smith said when asked if Mitchell’s situation was compliance or NCAA-related.

When approached in the second half by reporters seeking clarification on Mitchell’s status, Athletic Director Jeff Long declined comment.

“No sir. There’s a football game going on,” Long said as he walked briskly into the team radio booth.

Mitchell has caught 15 passes for 237 yards in 2012. He entered the game as the team’s third-leading receiver.

Asked if the junior would return this season, Smith did not rule out the possibility.

“Let’s just let that sit,” Smith said. “We anticipate yes. But I don’t … we’ll have more answers for you on that.”
