Bo Mattingly Sports Show Moves to Fresh Talk KKSP-FM

3 min read

Bo Mattingly’s sports talk radio show is jumping to news and talk station KKSP-FM, 93.3, in central Arkansas as the “Fresh Talk” station tweaks its programming lineup.

“Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly,” which currently airs on KABZ-FM, 103.7, in Little Rock, will begin airing on KKSP on Dec. 10, according to a new release from KKSP Station Manager Neal Gladner.

Mattingly’s four-hour show will air from 2-6 p.m. weekdays. It is co-hosted by Clay Henry and Dudley Dawson of Hawgs Illustrated.

Replacing Mattingly’s show on KABZ-FM is “Overtime,” a show hosted by former Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback Matt Jones and KABZ contributor Trey Schaap. “Overtime” goes on the air Nov. 12.

“Our central Arkansas listeners have been telling me they want to hear me later in the day, especially on the way home from work,” Mattingly said. “2 p.m. to 6 p.m. is our time slot on our other network stations throughout most of Arkansas and our central Arkansas listeners wanted to hear the entire show. This is a chance to make that happen.”

The show currently airs from 1-4 p.m. on KABZ, “The Buzz.” Mattingly said the arrangement has been difficult because the show airs at a different time on other Arkansas stations.

“Since our show airs on different stations throughout the state, some may not realize that our time slot in central Arkansas has been different than most of our other affiliates,” Mattingly said. “We have always been on from 1-4 p.m. in the Little Rock market, but 2-6 p.m. everywhere else, which caused a strain on our system. This move puts us 2-6 p.m. throughout the state and allows us to produce a better product for our loyal listeners.”

Mattingly said it was “an honor” to be a part of the KABZ lineup. His final show on The Buzz will air Friday.

Justin Acri, KABZ’s program director, said he was surprised by Mattingly’s move.

“Bo came to us a few weeks ago to let us know of his desire to sever the relationship between his company and 103.7 The Buzz,” he said. “We were surprised by the decision, but wish him nothing but the best as he continues in his career.

“We are thrilled about being able to put together what we think will be a high-quality and extremely entertaining show with a Razorback legend in Matt Jones and a very talented and experienced broadcaster in Trey Schaap.”

Sports, Politics, Culture

As part of the move, KKSP said it will operate the “Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly” network as the flagship station of the show. KKSP will also handle all sales and marketing efforts for the program. KKSP and Mattingly said they plan to work together to expanding the show and create new programs.

Another local sports show, “Game On with Wess and Michael,” will precede “Sports Talk.” Wess Moore is a former sports anchor for Gannett Co.-owned CBS affiliate KTHV-TV, Channel 11. Michael Smith is a former Arkansas Razorbacks running back. Their program debuted on KKSP earlier this year.

KKSP also said it will also air “Weekly Fried with Blake Eddins and Rex Nelson,” which airs from 7-9 p.m. Monday. The program, hosted by former Razorbacks basketball player Eddins and former Mike Huckabee communications director Nelson, will cover sports, politics and southern cuisine.

‘Overtime’

Jones, born in Fort Smith, attended high school in Van Buren until his senior year, when he transferred to Northside High School in Fort Smith and became a star quarterback and a sprinter on the track team.

In college, Jones played football and basketball for the Razorbacks and was later drafted by the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. He retired from the NFL in 2010, and has been contributor to KAZB throughout the football season.

“I’m very excited to begin my broadcast career at The Buzz,” Jones said. “I’m really looking forward to joining such a talented staff and a great organization.”

Trey Schaap was born in Little Rock and attended Parkview High School and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He began his broadcasting career at WCBI-TV in ColumbusMiss., and later worked for Little Rock NBC affiliate KARK-TV, Channel 4.

In January 2004, Schaap joined Signal Media, which owns KABZ. He’s covered high school sports, the Razorbacks and the Southeastern Conference.
