Dr. Zulma Toro-Ramos Takes UALR Leadership Position (Super Mover)

Zulma Toro-Ramos previously served as dean of the College of Engineering at Wichita State University.

Beginning in January, Dr. Zulma Toro-Ramos will assume the position of provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UALR, leading the university’s six colleges, Graduate School and William H. Bowen School of Law.

“Dr. Zulma Toro-Ramos brings to UALR an impressive portfolio of leadership skills and experiences that will serve this university very well. She enthusiastically embraces our student success goals, and her vision and values are a good match for UALR’s mission,” said Chancellor Joel E. Anderson. “She is well-prepared to lead our university’s academic division through the challenging times that lie ahead for higher education. Dr. Toro-Ramos has a strong record of engaging the community as well as state legislators to the benefit of her university and state.”

Zulma Toro-Ramos completed her bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering at the University of Puerto Rico in 1982. One year later, she earned a master’s degree in industrial and operation engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 1988, she received a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Toro-Ramos has served since 2005 as dean of the College of Engineering at Wichita State University in Kansas, where she was responsible for overseeing more than 2,200 students and 54 full-time faculty members. In addition to her deanship, she served as director of the Center for Innovation & Enterprise Engagement. Before moving to Kansas, she spent five years as dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Conn., and from 1999 to 2001 she was chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez.
