Entergy Arkansas Closes on Malvern Power Plant Buy

1 min read

Entergy Arkansas Inc. on Friday said it has completed the purchase of the Hot Spring Energy Facility in Malvern.

Entergy first announced plans to acquire the plant in 2011. The $253 million deal includes a 620-megawatt natural gas turbine. It was purchased from KGen Hot Spring LLC of Houston.

The deal was under scrutiny by the Department of Justice’s antitrust division. It believed Entergy was using its control of transmission lines to harm power generators like KGen.

Earlier this month, the division allowed Entergy to carry out the deal provided Entergy continue its move to the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (MISO) and subsequent spinoff of its transmission network to ITC Holdings.

The release noted that the power plant is located less than a mile from where Entergy Arkansas (then Arkansas Power & Light) founder Harvey Couch put down the company’s first transmission line, which stretched between Malvern and Arkadelphia, in 1913.
