Joan I. Duffy, the former Little Rock bureau chief for the Memphis Commercial Appeal who had spent the past 10 years working for the Office of Communications at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, died Thursday at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center. She was 61.

Duffy was hospitalized Tuesday after developing complications from cancer, according to the announcement sent to UALR employees by Communications Director Judy Williams.

"As you can imagine, we are numbed by the loss of our colleague," Williams wrote. "Never one to dwell on her health problems, our friend would prefer that we honor her memory today by cracking a political joke, drinking a liter or three of Diet Coke, going out to lunch with close buddies, writing something that we're passionate about, curling up with a good book, or cooking a homemade pot of soup."

A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home in Little Rock. It was originally sheduled for Monday morning but has been delayed until the afternoon.
