It's Official: Coleman Dairy is Now Hiland

Central Arkansas shoppers will find a new name for a familiar dairy brand.

The iconic Coleman Dairy brand of Little Rock was officially renamed Hiland Dairy on Friday, a move years in the making and first reported by ArkansasBusiness.com.

Coleman Dairy was established in Little Rock in 1862, sold to a dairy cooperative in 1995, and in 2006 became a division of Hiland, owned by Prairie Farms of Carlinville, Ill.

The Coleman plant in Little Rock will continue to function in the same way, producing the same milk and dairy products. But the sign on the door and the milk jugs, as Coleman general manager Mike Flagg told ArkansasBusiness.com in November, will now say Hiland Dairy.

Flagg said Hiland waited to phase out the Coleman brand to allow Coleman Dairy to recognize its 150th anniversary this month.

Hiland, based in Springfield, Mo., already operated two Arkansas plants in Fayetteville and Fort Smith.

No Coleman employees are losing their jobs, and members of the Coleman family who still worked for the dairy will continue in their same roles.

In a Friday press release, Hiland officials said retail demand to have one label and one UPC across multiple states and markets was a major factor in the decision to phase out the Coleman brand, which was marketed in Little Rock and also in several Caribbean nations.

"The only thing changing is the label on the outside of the milk and dairy product containers and the familiar milk splash image will remain the same," said Hiland president and general manager Gary Aggus. "Under the Hiland brand, Coleman is still the same, local, farmer-owned dairy that has delivered wholesome products to its customers for one-and-a-half centuries and will continue to produce milk right here in Little Rock."

Hiland operates 11 plants in five states – Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma – serving customers in those states as well as Colorado, Iowa and Texas.
