FedEx Chooses El Dorado for New Shipping Facility

FedEx of Memphis will soon bid on a contractor to develop a 14,000-SF shipping center in El Dorado.

Henry Florsheim, CEO of the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce, is also on the Union County Industrial Board. He said the board has been attempting to work out a deal with FedEx since October.

FedEx rents a shipping center in El Dorado at 1908 W. Hillsboro St., Florsheim said, and it had been hunting for a new location. The industrial board was hoping the company would stay in the area.

“FedEx could have built this facility anywhere,” Florsheim said. “They chose El Dorado based on the availability of the land and the proximity to the customer base. The people who work for the existing FedEx facility won’t be uprooted, so that’s good. The new facility will allow FedEx to do things more efficiently here.”

The new building will be located on the board’s 300-acre industrial park on Champagnolle Boulevard.

FedEx purchased 10 acres in the park for $30,000, Florsheim said, and the board approved the development in late March. The total cost of the project wasn’t available.

FedEx employs fewer than 50 at the existing shipping center, but that number may rise when the new building is finished.

“It may just be one or two new jobs to start, but it will give them a lot more capacity,” Florsheim said. “It will make them more competitive. What we’re doing is strengthening a company that already has a facility here. Hopefully in the long run it will create more jobs.”
