Barber Co-Defendant James Van Doren Asks Court for Bond Relief

1 min read

James Van Doren, a New York resident and former attorney charged with being entirely too helpful to Brandon Barber, has lost his job with Citigroup Global Markets Inc.

Van Doren is out of work because of the federal charges he currently faces as a co-defendant of Barber, the former northwest Arkansas real estate developer: one count of conspiracy to commit bankruptcy fraud, one count of bankruptcy fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, three counts of money laundering and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

During his April arraignment, Van Doren, 37, asked for relief on the $25,000 cash bond needed to secure his release.

Judge Erin Setser would not set a lower bond but agreed to let Van Doren petition the court for the return of his money in case he lost his job as a result of the pending charges.

A motion to modify the terms of Van Doren’s release was recently filed, citing his recent termination, lack of income and difficulty securing work as a result of the seven counts he is facing.

Van Doren, according to the filing, has “a substantial financial need for the $25,000” and asks that his money be refunded.

Van Doren is a 1994 graduate of Nettleton High in Jonesboro.
