No Endangered Beetles at Barling Mall Site

1 min read

BARLING – A proposed 70-acre mall at Barling cleared a regulatory hurdle when a survey turned up no endangered beetles on the property.

Officials said Wednesday that traps set to check for the presence of endangered burying beetles came up empty.

The site on former Fort Chaffee land is included in an area that’s a habitat for the orange and black beetle.

Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority director Ivy Owen told the Southwest Times Record site work could start within a couple of weeks.

Chaffee Crossing Real Estate Inc. says it is planning a 70-store outdoor mall and bought the land for $2.2 million.

The beetle study was conducted by an entomologist.
