Arkansas' unemployment rate remained steady at 7.4 percent for August, the state Department of Workforce Services said Friday.

The U.S. jobless rate dipped in August to 7.3 percent from 7.4 percent. The state's civilian labor force dropped by 4,800 in August, a result of 5,300 fewer employed and 500 more unemployed Arkansans, according to DWS.

"The number of employed declined, though the drop was not enough to change the jobless rate," said DWS spokesperson Bernadette Coleman in a press release. "This is the fifth time in 2013 that the jobless rate has remained stable between months."

The biggest industry gainers in August were government, with an increase of 3,900 reflecting the start of the school year, and construction, with an increase of 1,200 jobs attributed to a rise in specialty trade contractors.

The biggest losses were seen in trade, transportation and utilities (loss of 1,900), and leisure and hospitality (loss of 800).
