Health Care Journal Started in Little Rock

A branch of a Louisiana health care journal will begin publication in Little Rock this month.

Healthcare Journal of Little Rock is the third magazine to be released by U.S. Healthcare Journals, which also has magazines in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Founder and Chief Editor Smith Hartley told Outtakes that the magazine will be published on a bimonthly basis. He said the publishing group has been printing its journals since 2007, expanding from Baton Rouge to New Orleans in 2011.

“What we do is we cover the health care industry and all things having to do with health care, including providers, insurance and public health as well,” Hartley said.

The magazine will be mailed to about 10,000 of what Hartley referred to as “health care leaders,” including physicians, dentists, chiropractors, insurance officials, hospital administrators and others.

The journal is sent to its readers for free and is supported through advertising sponsorships. Hartley employs an ad sales director and the articles will be written by local freelancers and some local correspondents.

Hartley said he chose Little Rock for the size of its health care industry, as well as its proximity to Louisiana.

“The size of Little Rock and what’s going on in Little Rock in terms of its health care industry seems like a perfect fit for us,” he said.

Hartley said he wasn’t concerned about the distance between his Louisiana publications and Little Rock. He said he expects to spend a good deal of time in Little Rock.

“The model is similar,” he said. “We’re essentially plugged into the same sorts of people, and the health care issues are somewhat the same.”

Hartley’s company itself is almost entirely digital, enough so that he is considering moving his “headquarters” from Louisiana to Washington.

Hartley has a background in hospital administration, where he spent about 16 years of his career.

“This is easier than administration,” he said. “It’s more fun, too. It’s a fun responsibility to be responsible for the media of the health care industry. We feel like we’ve done a good job and want to continue.”
