Stephen R. Adkison was named the new provost and vice president for academic affairs at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, effective July 1. The provost is the second-highest ranking officer position at Henderson. As provost, Adkison will serve as the chief academic officer. “I am thrilled to add Dr. Stephen Adkison to our senior leadership team,” said Henderson President Glen Jones. “His character, passion, experience, and commitment to faculty and student success will serve Henderson well.”

Adkison comes to Henderson State from Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, where he is provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. Before joining Eastern Oregon, he held several positions at Idaho State University, including associate provost and associate vice president for academic programming and review.

He received his bachelor’s degree in English and teaching from Montana State University in 1986 and went on to teach at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and Huron Shores Writing Institute. It was at the University of Nevada-Reno where Adkison began his focus on higher education, earning his master’s in English and writing in 1997 and his doctorate in English, rhetoric and composition in 2000. He joined the faculty there, holding positions of increasing responsibility, including interim director for the Center for Teaching & Learning and faculty coordinator for assessment and program review for academic affairs.

He and his family are “looking forward to joining Henderson’s long tradition as The School with a Heart and becoming part of the Reddie community, and are delighted to be moving to Arkadelphia,” Adkison said.
