What's being called a "record gift" from an alumna has put the Southern Arkansas University Alumni Association ahead of schedule on its plans for a pavilion in the Welcome Center lawn.

The donation from Laura Lusby Winning and her husband, Kyle, is in honor of Winning’s parents, Geraldine Tipton Lusby and Edsel Partee Lusby, both former instructors at SAU. The pavilion will be named "The Lusby Gathering Pavilion."

Assistant Dean for Integrated Marketing and Media Relations Aaron Street said the donors wished to keep the donation amount private. Estimates on the cost of the pavilion have come in around $200,000, Street said.

"I cannot tell you how much SAU and Magnolia meant to me," Winning said in the university news release. "This pavilion will bring together all of Magnolia, and really help SAU to reach out to its past and present students."

SAU expects the covered, open-air pavilion to be a welcome addition for tailgaters attending Mulerider football games.

The proposed 2,720-SF pavilion will hold about 250 people. It will have restrooms, a fireplace, a serving kitchen and outdoor television screens.

"We are extremely excited about this new project and even more excited to offer our Mulegating alumni more comfortable accommodations to enjoy during their Mulegating experience," Ceil Bridges, SAU alumni director, said.
