The 100,000-SF Batesville community center will feature a gym, catering kitchen, meeting rooms and indoor pool, along with other amenities.

Construction is expected to begin this month on a $22 million community center in Batesville.

The approximately 100,000-SF center will feature a gym that can hold three basketball courts, a walking/running track, a catering kitchen, fitness rooms, meeting rooms and indoor swimming pools, said Batesville Parks & Recreation Director Jeff Owens. Outside the center will be more than 12,000 SF of a water area that includes splash pads and a “lazy” river.

The city wanted to include a number of features in the community center so it could be used to attract conventions or hold sporting events.

“The whole thought process was we can build this once,” Owens said. “And when you build it, you can’t necessarily expand on it, so we’re going to do it right the first time.”

The center is expected to open in July 2015.

Owens said the center was needed because the city has never had a community center, and the city’s swimming pools were outdated. The city hasn’t opened a new swimming pool since the 1970s, he said.

Voters in the city of about 10,000 people approved a 1 percent sales tax in 2012 to help pay for the center and its maintenance, he said.

The general contractor on the project is G.A.G. Builders Inc. of Cabot, and the architect is ETC Engineers & Architects Inc. of Little Rock.
