KATV Channel 7 Sweeps February Nielsens

2 min read

KATV, Channel 7, kept its lead ahead of Little Rock’s other local news stations for February’s Nielsen household ratings.

The data comes from Nielsen Media Research of New York.

Year over year, KATV showed gains in nearly all of its Monday through Friday news programs, and remained ahead of other stations in each slot where it had competition. Its highest-rated slot was its “News at 6” show, with a 15.6 rating and a 29.4 percent share of viewership.

In that slot, its nearest competitor, KTHV-TV, Channel 11, had a rating of 7.2 and a share of 13.6 percent, staying mostly flat with the previous year.

“The trends we’ve seen over the last three years at KATV point not only to victory, but also to significant growth,” News Director Nick Genty said in a release.

KATV touted its ratings for key demographics in the 6 a.m. time slot. For adults ages 25 to 54 it had a 6.2 rating and for females in the same age group it had a 7.3 rating. By comparison, KARK-TV, Channel 4, came close with a 5 for adults and a 7 for females; KTHV had a 4 for adults and a 5 for females.

Notably, some of this ratings period reflects KARK’s airing of the XXII Olympic Winter Games. For example, during the 10 p.m. time slot, KARK gained 3.4 rating points, putting it at 7.6, just behind KTHV’s 7.8 and giving it a 17.3 percent viewership share.

KATV General Manager Mark Rose noted that it was “remarkable” that KATV continued to pull ahead in that time slot with a 9.9 rating, despite competing with the Olympics. Since the February ratings period, however, KATV has lost one of its 6 and 10 p.m. anchors, Christina Munoz, to a public relations job at the University of Central Arkansas.

KARK and jointly managed KLRT-TV, Channel 16, do not subscribe to Nielsens’ rating service, so their staffs cannot comment on them.

Each Nielsen household rating point represents 1 percent of about 560,000 households in the market. Each household share point represents 1 percent of the number of homes with TVs tuned into a station at a given time.
