Jonesboro Liquor Sales Up 5.26 Percent in 2013

1 min read

Establishments in Jonesboro sold $8.2 million worth of alcohol in 2013, which was up $408,255, or 5.26 percent, over 2012’s numbers.

In 2013, 38 businesses, ranging from the 501 Club to the VFW, had a private club permit from the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to serve alcohol in “dry” Craighead County.

Montine McNulty, the executive director of the Arkansas Hospitality Association, said the increase in sales is because more restaurants are allowed to serve alcohol in the city.

In 2009, only 22 companies had the permit to sell alcohol.

Being able to serve beer and wine “has opened up renewed interest by restaurants wanting to locate there,” McNulty said. “It’s just more of a business opportunity.”

The alcohol sales generated $408,842 in tax revenue for the city of Jonesboro, according to the Alcoholic Beverage Tax Collection Report on file with the city. The tax on alcohol is 5 percent. The money goes into the city’s general fund.
