Verizon Wireless said Monday that it's adding more than 285 jobs this year to its Arkansas operations.

The positions will be added in the customer service, technical support and sales areas. Jonathon Blitz, director of business sales, said the majority of the sales positions will be filled at retail stores in Arkansas, while most of the customer service positions will be filled at Verizon's call center in Little Rock.

Blitz said Verizon was seeking to hire motivated, tech-savvy individuals.

Salaries for the positions would vary, Blitz said, depending on experience. Among various incentives offered to the employees, Blitz said Verizon Wireless would provide up to $8,000 a year in tuition reimbursement.

"A college degree is not required for many of these positions," Blitz said. "At the same time, we are very supportive from a training perspective."

Blitz made the announcement with Gov. Mike Beebe at a news conference Monday morning. During the event, Beebe thanked the company for its efforts to assist recent storm victims in Arkansas.

"We're all dependent on the ability to communicate, and you all did a great job of ensuring and maximizing the ability to communicate," he said.

Before the Verizon announcement, AT&T announced that it had hired more than 450 employees in Arkansas last year, and that it has openings for nearly 80 positions, including more than 50 new jobs.
