Public ports and facilities are eligible for a new grant program of the Arkansas Waterways Commission.

The Arkansas Port, Intermodal and Waterway Development grant was created by the state legislature and provides funds for capital improvement and dredging projects. Applications for the grant are available on Waterways Commission website at, and the deadline for applications is June 1.

“Through this grant, the Arkansas Legislature has given ports and intermodal facilities a great tool to continue growing Arkansas’ economy,” said Gene Higginbotham, the executive director of the Arkansas Waterways Commission. “Arkansas is third in the nation in river miles, an economic opportunity that we are not fully utilizing.”

Grants will be awarded in November. The commission said a 10-percent match is required for capital improvements and 50 percent for dredging projects.
