The University of Central Arkansas has named an alumnus and former trustee as its next chief of staff.

Kelley Erstine, a Sheridan native, will assume the duties Sept. 1. His salary will be $165,000 a year.

"I am very pleased that Kelley Erstine has agreed to serve as chief of staff," President Tom Courtway said in a news release. "He knows the institution very well, is a proven administrator and is well known throughout the state of Arkansas."

Erstine graduated from UCA in 1979 with a degree in journalism. He was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2000, and served there until he became vice president for institutional advancement in January 2004. He served in that position, during the Lu Hardin administration, until July 2008.

He left UCA for Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina where Erstine is currently the CEO.

The university's former chief of staff, Jack Gillean, resigned in 2012 after he was alleged to have given his master key to a UCA student, who used it to break into offices for the purpose of stealing exams and prescription medications.

Gillean was found guilty on six counts of commercial burglary in March, and sentenced to three years in prison. He faces additional charges of fraudulent insurance act and issuing a false financial statement.
