Pulaski County Jail Reopens For First Time Since July 1

1 min read

LITTLE ROCK— The Pulaski County jail is open again, more than three weeks after an over-capacity inmate population prompted its closure to most nonviolent offenders.

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Carl Minden says the jail reopened at 6 a.m. Thursday. The jail had been closed since July 1, after its population rose to 1,281 inmates.

The detention center has a capacity for 1,210 inmates. Minden says the county jail’s population Thursday morning is 1,146.

Like other jails in the state, Pulaski County has seen an increase in the number of backlogged state inmates awaiting beds in prisons. Earlier this week, the county reached an agreement with the Arkansas Department of Correction to lease an unused facility to the state, which allows up to 250 inmates to be transferred out of county jails.
