CEO Jeffrey Gardner leads Arkansas' youngest public company and the biggest rural exchange carrier in the country.
|
At a Glance:Windstream Corp. formed in July 2006 when Little Rock's Alltel Corp. spun-off its wireline sector and merged it with Valor Communications Group Inc. of Irving, Texas. Out of that $9.1 billion transaction rose Arkansas' youngest public company and the biggest rural exchange carrier in the country, with 3.3 million access lines in 16 states. While local and long-distance voice services are the company's largest business segments, Windstream CEO Jeffrey Gardner said the company is focused on growth in its broadband and entertainment services. Annual revenue has grown to about $3.26 billion. Earnings surged 68 percent to $917 million, but almost half of that, $451.3 million, came from the sale of the company's directory publishing business in November 2007. Windstream also nearly doubled its market presence in North Carolina with the $485 million acquisition of CT Communications Inc. of Concord, N.C. in May 2007. Based in Little Rock, Windstream employs 1,100 in Arkansas and 8,000 across the company.
