Reference and Instruction Librarian


Philander Smith College invites applications and nominations for the position of Reference and Instruction Librarian.

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Reference and Instruction Librarian will take a central role in providing reference services, in addition to implementing an information literacy program.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (including, but not limited to):

•Leads in the planning, design, delivery, promotion, and assessment of the library’s information literacy program
• Develops, distributes, and implements instructional design methodologies
• Teaches library use and information literacy classes
• Promotes awareness of library services and resources
• Develops and updates the library website
• Assists in collection development
• Serves as library liaison to some academic departments
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Library Director


Master of Library Science degree from an ALA – accredited program.
Reference service experience in an academic library
Experience in Library Instruction
Experience with use of web authoring tools
Experience with Integrated library systems, online databases, and other on-line support tools
Strong public service commitment and the flexibility to work some evening and weekend hours when necessary
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Enthusiastic, knowledgeable and creative
