Job Objective: To perform repairs and maintenance of buildings, fixtures, and structures in public, private and animal populated areas of the Little Rock Zoo.
Essential Job Functions: Constructs or repairs cement curbs, sidewalks, and walls, including setting forms, pouring concrete, troweling, and finishing surfaces.
Builds retaining walls from wooden crossties, using hammers, nails, and saws.
Performs building, structure, grounds, cage or animal enclosure repairs and maintenance in exotic-animal populated areas utilizing cutting torch, and hand and power tools as needed.
Performs finish carpentry, masonry and painting work required to remodel, construct and repair buildings and furniture; operates various hand tools to cut, shape, and install various materials.
Operates earth-moving equipment, including a backhoe and front-end loader to dig trenches, fill holes, load materials, and grade for sodding and bedding.
Drives light-duty pickup or dump truck to haul supplies, equipment and other materials to job sites.
Provides lead working supervision to assigned part-time employees.
Checks levels of fuel and oil in vehicles and equipment before operating; transports vehicles or equipment for repairs.
Operates a bucket truck to install and remove various Zoo event banners throughout of the City of Little Rock.
Paints park benches and perform other building or equipment maintenance during inclement weather.
Operates equipment requiring a Commercial Driver's License in the performance of essential job functions.
Minimum Qualifications and Additional Requirements: These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through the completion of sixth grade, one (1) year of experience in semi-skilled maintenance work in a construction area, one (1) year of experience operating earth-moving equipment, and one (1) year of lead work or supervisory experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Must possess a valid Arkansas Class B (Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License within ninety (90) days of employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
Secondary Duties: Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures and sprinkler systems in facilities and recreational areas, as directed.
Operates hand tools to trim shrubs, cut grass, clean sidewalks and remove debris.
Operate riding lawn mower to cut grass.
Empties trash containers.
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the methods and procedures required in carpentry work.
Knowledge of the methods and procedures required in masonry work.
Knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in mixing concrete.
Knowledge of equipment and tools employed in plumbing and sprinkler systems.
Skill in the operation of earth-moving equipment, pickup truck and dump truck.
Skill in the use and maintenance of power and hand tools.
Skill in the operation of an automatic and manual transmission vehicle.
Ability to operate various hand tools to cut, shape, and install various materials.
Ability to perform masonry and carpentry work.
Ability to construct cement walls, sidewalks, and curbs.
Ability to build and install retaining walls.
Ability to direct the activities of assigned personnel.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
