BancorpSouth: Big-Time Banking With a Community Feel

BancorpSouth: Our niche is nurturing customers with 3 locations in a large market. |
If banking research is accurate, then Little Rock’s BancorpSouth is in excellent shape in terms of providing what customers want most from a bank: good service and cutting-edge products. BancorpSouth provides both, giving its customers the financial power and sophisticated products of a “mega-bank” while offering the hometown feel of a community bank. With friendly, personalized service and decisions made locally, one customer at a time, it’s the best of both worlds. BancorpSouth appeared in Little Rock five years ago when it acquired Pinnacle Bank. Bob Althoff, who was Pinnacle Bank’s president, moved on to become BancorpSouth’s Arkansas regional president. Althoff’s banking career began in 1971 when as a college student he worked one summer at Worthen Bank (today Bank of America). Banking has been in his blood ever since. Roy Snook, a 15-year veteran of Little Rock banking, was hand-picked by Althoff to be president of BancorpSouth in Little Rock. Snook and Althoff became friends while working together in the early 1990s. Snook says he was an easy recruit because of the BancorpSouth culture. “Here, I feel I can best serve customers because we have all the financial products they need, and we can provide personal, one-on-one service that many larger banks cannot,” Snook says. BancorpSouth is far from being the largest Little Rock bank, but that does not seem to matter to many customers. “We’re more into quality of service than we are into the number of locations we have,” Snook said. Currently, BancorpSouth has three locations in Little Rock, with a fourth planned on the Highway 10 corridor toward the end of the year. Snook is proud of the team he and Althoff have assembled. John Roewe, executive vice president, heads up a nine-member loan department that includes Susan Dunn, senior vice president, and Gaylord Waltermire, senior vice president; both have more than 20 years of banking experience and are active community leaders. Community involvement is important at BancorpSouth. It is the official bank of Riverfest, the first-ever presenting sponsor of the Delta Classic 4 Literacy football game, and it is highly involved with the program Positive Atmosphere Reaches Kids (PARK). The top-tier products offered by BancorpSouth include Express Deposit, where customers can deposit checks from their offices; an array of cash-management products like zero-balance accounts that can be linked to interest-bearing investment sweeps, a line of credit or both; and the latest product under development — mobile banking, where banking transactions can be made through a cellular telephone. BancorpSouth also expanded its footprint beyond traditional banking in 2003 when it acquired Little Rock’s Ramsey, Krug, Farrell and Lensing Insurance Agency. BancorpSouth began serving customers over 130 years ago. Today, BancorpSouth, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of BancorpSouth Inc., operates 283 commercial banking, insurance and broker/dealer locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. BancorpSouth Inc. is a financial holding company headquartered in Tupelo, Miss., with approximately $12 billion in assets.
