Fort Smith Retakes Top Spot in Arkansas Tech Business Index

Fort Smith returned to the top spot in the Arkansas Tech Business Index for January 2015, overtaking Fayetteville.

The index is a comprehensive measure that provides a snapshot of economic activity in Arkansas cities. It encompasses a labor index, housing market index, construction index and retail sales index. It is produced by the Arkansas Tech University College of Business and is sponsored by Arvest Bank.

January marked the addition of a new Arkansas city to the index: Mountain Home. It is the 18th Arkansas city tracked by the index and debuts at No. 9 with an index rating of 100.36 for January.

Fort Smith took the top spot from Fayetteville with a rating of 107.19, the ninth time in the last 13 months it has been No. 1 in the index. Nine cities had ratings above 100 in the January index. The index is based around a rating of 100, with 100 indicating a city is doing better than the state average from 2009 to the present.

El Dorado saw the biggest increase in its ATBI index from December 2014 to January 2015 with an increase of 1.61 points, while Fayetteville experienced the biggest decrease, dropping 4.43 points.
